What is the Crosscare Dublin 15 Mentoring Programme?
Following the development of the Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI) Mentoring Programme in 2009 Crosscare with the support of the ICI will run a mentoring programme that will match local people (Irish and any other long established Irish residents) with migrants through one to one mentoring relationships. The mentor will assist the migrant (mentee) in navigating Irish systems, using the time to impart practical information on access to social and cultural activities and to provide assistance with accessing services, education and support in English language development. The mentee will provide knowledge and expertise on the migration experience and on another country – its customs and norms. Sharing the mentee’s lived experience in Ireland will provide valuable information to the mentor not only on migrants’ lives in Ireland but also on what needs improvement to facilitate integration of migrants in a wider context.
The aims of the Programme are:
- To enhance integration in terms of offering practical help and advice which is relevant to everyday life;
- To support confidence building and to contribute to English language proficiency;
- To provide information and support in accessing services (education, housing, health, employment);
- To combat isolation and to provide the potential to form mutually beneficial and lasting friendships;
- To provide a greater understanding of other cultures;
- To increase knowledge on the local area and on community activities, in order to increase access to these activities;
- To bridge communities: the newcomer and host community learn about each other.
What is the expected commitment?
Participants will be required to partake in at least one orientation session before committing to a minimum of five hours a month with their mentee/mentor for 3 months, supporting and encouraging them as they seek to integrate into Irish society.
